books and awards!

This year’s Man Booker Shortlist has been announced with a strong list of contenders. It is not only exciting to see who has won this year’s award but this list is a guaranteed good selection of books and gives readers the opportunity to choose something they wouldn’t normally pick up.
The list comprises eight men and five women authors some who have been entered before and some who have won. Each author is well established with no debut novels making this year’s list. There is a range of stories and concepts to each book making it difficult to choose which make the shortlist, but administrator for the Man Booker Prize, Ion Trewin, says this year’s books could be characterised by their humour. “There’s been a great deal of laughter this year.” So will you be reading through the list or do can you take a good guess as to which six will be making the short list? For that we will have to wait and see.
The Shortlist will be announced on the 7th September.

Congratulations to Barbara Demick for winning this year’s Samuel Johnson Prize for non-fiction with Nothing to Envy. The title comes from a song North Korean children are taught “We have nothing to envy in the world” but Demick tells the tale of 6 individuals who believed there was better beyond their country’s borders. A true account of human hardship and survival under one of the most secretive states on this planet.

Awards

Sahitya akademi awards......
The Sahitya Akademi was set up by the Government of India to foster and coordinate literary activities in all the Indian languages and to promote through them the cultural unity of India.
The Akademi was formally launched by the Government of India on March 12, 1954. It was registered as a society on January 7, 1956 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
Every year since its inception in 1954, the Sahitya Akademi awards prizes to the most outstanding books of literary merit published in any of the major Indian languages recognised by it. The award carries a monetary component
(Rs. 50, 000) and a plaque.
Sahitya Akademi gives twenty four awards to literary works in the languages it has recognised and an equal number to literary translations from and into the languages of India, both after an year-long process of scrutiny, discussion and selection. The awards are meant to recognise and promote excellence in Indian writing and expanding the very definition of Indian literature by acknowledging new trends and movements. They are a reflection of current tastes and contribute to the formation of an Indian sensibility.

Bhasha samman

The Akademi also gives special awards called Bhasha Samman to writers/scholars for significant contribution to the languages not formally recognised by the Akademi as also for contribution to classical & medieval Literature. It also has a system of electing Fellows and Honorary Fellows, as also offering Anand Coomarswamy and Premchand Fellowships.
